JellyBelly vs. Her Insurance Company

Firstly, I know that I am blessed to have free health care in Canada and that the majority of my prescription drugs are covered.

Until recently, the only prescription that I have had to pay for out-of-pocket was Lo.w D.ose Nal.trexone. Unfortunately, I have just found out that my wonderful compounded T3 is not covered, and possibly the DHEA that I've been taking.

I'm currently on hold with a customer service representative who is checking if S.ynthroid and Ar.mour are covered.

Anyone out there with experience with either drug? I've been stable on the 30mg of T3 and I've been so happy with it. I haven't had a side effect in so long!

I really can't afford to dish out for drugs if I can find an alternative!

Help!

Update: Syn.throid is covered, but the rep couldn't find information on Ar.mour.

  1. I take the T3 from the compounding pharmacy too and I pay for it all out of my pocket....the pharmacy is not in network...so that is why. I do think it's worth it(becasue I feel better) so we just found a way to budget that in. There's a $4.oo dru.g generic list now so the dr's try to give me those meds which I am able to pay for without help from the ins.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Way back when I had to take compounded vi@gra for my lining and it wasn't covered, he'll at 100 a pop, several times a day. I hope its coverd!

  3. I take T3 compounded from Kubat. It is technically "covered" under my insurance, but the $42 per month cost is less than the $60 copay my insurance has for compounded drugs. And I have to file myself. I still file every month even though I know I won't get money for it because it's a good record of my drug costs (and I like to make the insurance company do some work if they aren't paying!)

  4. I don't have any experience with any of them, but I'll pray that you can get everything worked out with the insurance company!! :)

  5. Thyroid meds are so different for everyone. I didn't have luck on T3, Synthroid hasn't been much better, and now I'm crossing my fingers that Armour does the trick for me. Hopefully Synthroid will work for you if you do have to switch.

  6. I am taking Synthroid. For me, it is covered by the private insurance. However, 30 tablets is only about 15 CAD so dont worry too much about it.

  7. My insurance company doesn't pay for any compounded drugs. So, my T3 has never been covered. Synthroid is covered, I think, and I get that from a regular wal.mart pharmacy.

The meds and supplements can be so freaking expensive. I think I have been spending around $350-400 a month on rx's and supplements. Geesh!

  8. i'm guessing my claim for l.o.w dose naltr.exone is not going to be approved by my insurance company either?? sniff sniff.
it does suck to pay for these meds, maybe it's a pharmaceutical conspiracy!!!

  9. I've used Armour in the past but I have nothing to compare it with as that was the only one I was every put on and it was only for a short time. As soon as they found out we were ttc they yanked me off of it. Maybe that will tell you something there. Oh and my insurance here didn't cover it.

  10. Hope the other meds work for you! I paid out of pocket for my T3 also and it stinks. :(

  11. I take T3 and recently added Synthroid. Synthroid is covered, T3 is not. I pay $45 a month from Kubats (22.5 x2 a day). I like Synthroid. I had been on T3 awhile before needing to add it and my friend Jasmine helped me understand why T3 alone was no longer working. She was spot on with what the nurse said the following week. You can see my post about it, but I think you are in good hands. Hope you have a good experience on them as well.

  12. It totally depends on the person, I did not do well on Armour, (doctors think there was a protein in there my body didnt liek - gained 30 lbs in 3 months) - I currently take Synthroid which is fine for me (but Synthetic of course) and I di fine on T3/T4 compounds, but my insurance wasnt covering it so switched back to synthroid. Good luck with whatever you decide.

  13. You will go back to feeling like shit on synthroid. :) FYI

I'm on armour pregnant and ttc. You are fine on it if your doctor will prescribe it.

Most doctors are scared of it and do not know how to dose it.

Do not get on synthroid. :) Just my humble non thyroid self opinion. ;)

  15. Hope everything goes well - think of this as a little sneak preview to what it would be like outside of Canada/Britain. You also have pretty much the best insurance you can get here, so I bet it will work out in the long run. Hugs!

  16. Thyroid is so complicated. After reading the comments, it seems the best to go with symptoms and how they react to certain meds. Trial and error stinks, but it is an exercise in patience! Hope you get this figured out soon!

  17. UGH. Insurance companies stink. I hope that you can get everything covered. It always stresses me out paying all those med bills each month. They add up so quickly!
